There was no teaching in the School of Medical Sciences when Professor Williams was appointed temporary Head of School in 2011. After persuading the remaining staff to remain, Professor Williams began to expand the school. This led to the development of the Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree program (BMedSci), which saw its first intake of students in 2012. This was followed by the development of a Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education Practice (PGcertMEP) one year later, starting in October 2013.
This led to Professor Williams being appointed Head of School and Sub-dean of Medicine in 2012 to continue the work he had commenced.
Since then, the School has grown to over 200 Undergraduate and Post-graduate students, and over 30 Masters and PHD students on various courses. This has been helped by the transfer of Medical Biology and Biomedical degree courses from the School of Biological Sciences, besides the North West Cancer Research Institute. He has also secured additional financing for the BMedSci program from the Welsh Government through SIFT funding of £48,000 per year.
2015: Awarded a Distinction for a Masters in Medical Education submitted to Manchester University’s School of Medicine.
2015: A finalist at Bangor University’s Impact and Innovation Awards.
2015: Awarded a Personal Chair.
2016: Awarded a HEA Principal Fellow for his contribution to teaching and research guidelines.
