Transition Metal Complexes of N-heterocyclic CarbenesN-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have come to occupy a central position in the armory of organometallic chemists since the first isolation of imidazole-2-ylidene by Arduengo and co-workers. The most of research effort has been focused on the metal complexes with mono-N-heterocyclic carbenes. Recently bidentate or polydentate NHC-containing ligands have been designed and used in the preparation of new organometallic complexes with novel structures and catalytic properties. The research in our group include design, synthesis and reactivities of transition metal complexes with bis-N-heterocyclic carbenes, functionalized N-heterocyclic carbenes with another donor atoms, tripodal tris(N-heterocyclic carbenes) and macrocyclic N-heterocyclic carbenes. Several interesting results have been obtained. For example, we have revealed unexpected fluorination of the BH2 moiety during iridium(I) and rhodium(I) carbonyl complexes with the bis(3-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene)borate and [Cp2Fe]PF6. An unusual ring opening of one of the triazoyl rings was observed in the reaction of FeCl2 or CoCl2 with a bistriazolium salt, yielding Fe(III) and Co(III)-NHC complexes with the formation of C,N,O tridentate ligands. We are working with the metal complexes with two important poly(N-heterocyclic carbenes) ligands, poly(N-heterocyclic carbenes)borate and macrocyclic N-heterocyclic carbenes.Magnetic Molecular MaterialsSingle-molecule magnets (SMMs) have been extensively studied in the past two decades due to the slow magnetic relaxation and quantum tunneling phenomenon and their potential applications in magnetic information storage, quantum computation and molecular spintronics. The most reported single molecular magnets are those magnetic clusters constructed with several 3d metal ions. Recently mononuclear 4f, 5f and 3d metal complexes have been demonstrated to behave as SMMs (called as single ion magnets (SIMs)), which include MnIII, FeI, FeII, FeIII, CoII, NiI, and ReIV mononuclear complexes. It has been demonstrated the coordination geometry should have important influences on the magnetic properties of these SIMs. We have observed the slow magnetization relaxation in several Co(II) complexes with different coordination number and configurations. We are attempting to reveal the relationship between the magnetic properties and the coordination environments especially in those metal complexes with high coordination numbers. In collaboration with Prof. Zi-Ling Xue, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, USA, we are using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to determine zero-field splitting parameters and the electronic structures of these SIMs and related magnetic molecular materials.Metal Oxide NanomaterialsOver the past decade, synthesis of metal oxides micro/nanostructures with well-defined size and morphology have attracted extensive attention due to their unique properties and potential applications. Our research is concentrated on the synthesis of ternary metal oxides using the hydro(solvo)thermal routes with or without the assistance of microwave irradiation. In the past several years, some simple and effective synthetic approaches have been developed to prepare metal germinate, metal molybdates, and Bi-containing oxides with hierarchical structures. Their photocatalytic activities for the degradation of organic pollutants were studied. More recently we have controllably prepared CuGeO3 nanorods with different sizes. Our magnetic investigations show that the spin-Peierls transition can be quenched when the size of the CuGeO3 nanorods is small, giving a unique example of the dependence of physical properties of a solid on its sizes.""近期论文
