所党委书记，中国科学院环江喀斯特生态系统国家野外科学观测研究站站长，北京大学、华中农业大学、广西大学、湖南农业大学，河南大学，湖北大学等兼职教授，国务院政府津贴享受者，全国优秀科技工作者，国家重点研发计划项目首席科学家. 1997年7月-1999年7月任副所长，1999年8月-2001年8月任常务副所长，2001年9月-2013年2月任所长，2013年9月任所党委书记，长期从事景观格局变化与生态过程、生态服务研究。作为第一完成人完成的洞庭湖流域生态功能优化成果获湖南省政府科技进步一等奖、西南喀斯特生态系统退化机制与适应性修复成果获得中国科学院科技促进发展一等奖。
长期从事景观生态、区域生态研究。在洞庭湖流域研究中，从流域内高地、沿岸带和水体间相互作用的角度，提出“调整人地、人湖关系，重建流域坡地水土保持型土地利用格局与湖区适应洪涝灾害发生规律的避洪、耐渍型发展模式的生态安全体系”的景观生态设计；在喀斯特生态研究中，主持建成在国内有较大影响的长期生态试验研究平台，在喀斯特区域景观格局变化的生态过程响应、生态系统服务形成机理等方面取得重要进展，基于喀斯特景观结构与水土过程变化与生态服务提升的适应性生态恢复成果提出了可供选择政府选择的响应战略及替代技术途径，为国家西南石漠化治理重大工程与区域生态服务提升提供科学依据与重大技术支撑，发表论文100余篇，培养毕业博士、硕士研究生70余人。

近年主持国家重大基础研究计划喀斯特生态系统服务功能调控课题、中国科学院重大项目西南喀斯特生态系统服务功能维持机理研究、国家科技支撑计划西南生态安全屏障构建技术喀斯特峰丛洼地退化生态系统适应性修复课题、国家自然科学基金桂西北喀斯特区域植被演替及其驱动机制研究等。
