1983年9月至1987年7月，就读于北京大学物理系，获得学士学位
1987年9月至1990年9月，在中国科学院理论物理研究所读研究生
1990年9月至1995年5月，就读于美国密西根州立大学物理与天文系，获得硕士和博士学位
1995年5月至1997年4月，在美国科罗拉多大学（Boulder）做博士后
1997年4月至2000年8月，在美国费米国家实验室做博士后
2000年8月至2001年8月，在美国橡树岭国家实验室任研究员
2001年8月至2017年7月，任美国劳伦斯伯克利国家实验室研究员
2017年7月，加入上海科技大学物质科学与技术学院，任正教授
